Commercially safe AI image generation built into Photoshop and Illustrator.

What is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe Firefly is Adobe's suite of generative AI models, woven directly into Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Express, and the standalone Firefly web app. Its defining characteristic is that it was trained exclusively on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain material — which means you can use its outputs in commercial work without worrying about IP claims or legal grey areas that surround other image generators.

That commercial safety is a genuine differentiator. Midjourney and Stable Diffusion produce stunning images, but their training data provenance is disputed. For agencies, brands, and anyone producing images for clients, Firefly's licensing model is a significant practical advantage.

The flagship feature most people encounter first is Generative Fill in Photoshop. Select an area of a photo, type a description of what you want there, and Firefly replaces it seamlessly, matching the original lighting, perspective, and colour grading. It's genuinely impressive — and it reduces hours of manual editing to seconds.

Who is it for?

  • Graphic designers and art directors who need fast concept imagery that's safe for client work
  • Photographers who want to extend backgrounds, swap skies, or remove objects without manual masking
  • Marketing and social media teams generating large volumes of on-brand visuals
  • Non-designers using Adobe Express who want AI-assisted image creation without Photoshop experience
  • Illustrators using the Illustrator integration to generate editable vector art from text

Key features

  • Generative Fill (Photoshop): select any area and replace or extend it with AI-generated content
  • Generative Expand: extend a photo beyond its original borders — great for changing aspect ratios
  • Text to Image (web app): generate standalone images from text prompts with style controls
  • Text Effects: apply AI-generated textures and styles to text in Illustrator and Express
  • Vector generation (Illustrator): generate fully editable vector artwork from a prompt
  • Reference image matching: upload an image to match its style in new generations

Step-by-step setup

  1. Go to firefly.adobe.com and click Get started for free
  2. Sign in with an existing Adobe ID or create one — no credit card required for the free tier
  3. You'll have 25 generative credits per month on the free plan
  4. To use Generative Fill in Photoshop: open a photo, make a selection with any selection tool, then click Generative Fill in the contextual toolbar that appears
  5. Type a description of what you want to place there (or leave it blank to remove/fill the selected area)
  6. Firefly generates three variations — click through them and pick the best, or iterate with a refined prompt
  7. To use the standalone web app: go to firefly.adobe.com, choose Text to Image, type your prompt, and adjust Content type, Style, and Colour/Tone using the sidebar controls
  8. Download your result as JPEG or PNG, or open directly in Photoshop or Express for further editing

If you have a Creative Cloud subscription, your Firefly credits are higher and the integration with Photoshop and Illustrator is seamless — no switching between apps.

Tips for getting the most out of it

  • Use Generative Fill for extending images, not just replacing. Select beyond the edge of a photo and generate to expand the canvas — this is one of the most practically useful things Firefly can do.
  • Leave the Generative Fill prompt blank when removing objects. Selecting an unwanted object and pressing Generate with no prompt usually produces a natural-looking fill based on surrounding context.
  • Use Content type controls. The web app lets you specify Photo, Graphic, or Art style — this one setting has a big impact on the look of outputs.
  • Generate in batch. Firefly always generates three variations at once. Cycle through all three before deciding — the first isn't always the best.
  • Pair with Express for social content. Generate an image in Firefly, then bring it into Adobe Express to add text, brand colours, and resize it for every platform in one step.
